Southern Guild Summer Show: Transformation
Southern Guild Gallery in Cape Town is currently featuring their summer show, Transformation. The show exhibits newly commisioned work by 14 South African designers and artists whom use material and scale to challenge traditional understandings of art and design.
This exhibit includes never-before-seen masterpieces by the following artists and designers: Adam Birch, Chuma Maweni, Conrad Hicks, David Krynauw, Dokter and Misses, Guy du Toit, Jesse Ede, John Vogel, Madoda Fani, Otto Du Plessis, Sanell Aggenbach, Stanislaw Trzebinski, Trevor Potter and Xandre Kriel.
Southern Guild Director, and Curator of Transformation, Julian McGowan challenged this select group of artists and designers to create pieces that asked their audience to think about these two questions: ‘Does a sculpture become design if it offers a useful surface? Is a chair cast in bronze or carved in marble a sculpture?’. What’re your thoughts? Check out the exhibition and let us know!
Transformation runs until 20 February 2017 at Southern Guild Gallery located at Unit 1, 10 Lewin Street in Woodstock, Cape Town. The gallery is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 5pm, with Saturday showings only available by appointment. Note that Southern Guild will be closed for the holidays between 23 December 2016 – 9 January 2017.
